“You Are Set Free…”

“So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then, you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”

“Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. “The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”

John 8:31-36

The Lord is always extending His hand to us for salvation, and deliverance, and a deeper relationship with Him. Salvation is free! Jesus paid the price on the Cross on Calvary!

Know that deliverance, however, will cost you! Deliverance will cost you those acquaintances who may impede spiritual growth. Deliverance will cost you any and all bad habits which prove to be stumbling blocks to your sanctification. Deliverance will cost your worldly comforts which have become idols. Deliverance will cost your selfish thoughts which are not like Jesus. Deliverance will cost your carnal plans and replace them with God’s plans. Hallelujah!

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” Proverbs 9:10

Over the past year a close friend placed several questions to me regarding the Faith and my steadfast trust in the Word of God. I will only share a few for context. We had discussed the origins and construct of christian denominations, the purpose of Old and New Testament sacrifices, and who is gatekeeping the divinity and unadulterated, yet translated scripture of the Bible? Why did Jesus, the only Son of God Who remains pure and sinless, have to pay the ultimate cost for our salvation? What happens after the physical death of our bodies?

I implore those who may be faint of heart to refrain from clutching your pearls or condemning someone who is genuinely inquiring to gain understanding. First of all, none of these questions are alarming. If we would be honest, every believer has asked them in their heart at some point. The subsequent duty of the believer or non-believer would be to seek Him, to study the Word to show thyself approved, and to possess fertile soil in order to receive Biblical wisdom and prophetic knowledge. See what thus says the Lord! Check the Book.

“It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.” Proverbs 25:2

Although I am a little long in the tooth and was raised in the church, I found myself only able to respond with surface-level, best practices to these questions. I heard myself saying: “Well, we should do this because it’s the right thing to do;” or “Well, the pastor said so;” or “This is what I heard in Sunday School;” or the show stopper: “My grandmother told me!” Sadly, I could only permit the conversations to die as I faced my own ignorance of God’s Word and my lack of a personal relationship with Him.

These discussions inflamed my heartfelt desire to truly know God and to stand ten toes down on an unshakeable foundation. I came to understand one crucial fact. The only way to truly know God is to spend time in fervent prayer and by eating the Word daily. As believers, we should not only seek to speak with Our Redeemer to present requests concerning the limited expectations of our needs and desires, but we must also seek to hear from Him!

Be encouraged to know that we gain greater understanding through learning the principles, promises, covenants, and commands of God which are evidenced in His written Word. Seek to pen and memorize verses which touch a chord within you. I now possess a growing collection of index cards which I flip through regularly.

Explore books in the Bible to discover people and circumstances that may mirror your lived experiences. What did they do–rightly and wrongly? How did God and Jesus move for them or remain silent? Know that God forgives the contrite heart and redeems the time in the Name of Jesus!

Now, arm yourself!

  1. Write down the promises of God
    • [that’s how you will know who He is]
  2. Write down the splendor of God
  3. Forgive yourself and others. Forget the offense. Press towards the mark, daily!
  4. Study to show yourself approved
  5. STOP TALKING ABOUT IT! Leave it all in God’s capable Hands!
  6. Read and listen to the Bible, daily
    • [in the car, and as you prepare for the day or for bed, replace secular music or Netflix and Chillin’]

“If so, you must pick up your own cross and nail yourself to that tree. You must go to that graveyard and bury your flesh. You must close your coffin even though your flesh screams for survival. You must help the angels put the soil on top of your coffin. You must write your own epitaph, leave your grave, and shake the dust from your feet as you depart from that graveyard. You must leave the graveyard with your head held high and your shoulders back, ready to face a dying humanity. People who change the course of history have died to their flesh.”
