“A Little Sleep, A Little Slumber”

“I went by the field of the lazy man,

And by the vineyard of the man

lacking understanding and common sense;

And, behold, it was all overgrown with thorns,

And nettles were covering its surface,

And its stone wall was broken down.

When I saw, I considered it well;

I looked and received instruction.

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber,

A little folding of the hands to rest

[and daydream],”

Then your poverty will come as a robber,

And your want like an armed man.”

Proverbs 24: 30-34 AMP

Believer, over the many years I have experienced seasons of doubt, confusion, fear, and joy. When faced with making a decision or stepping into action, I would seek the advice of trusted family and close friendships. I will admit that in the midst of seeking I never sought the instruction of God through His Word nor had an intimate conversation with Him. Certainly, I have cried out to God after the proverbial wheels fell off or after all of my worldly knowledge and physical efforts proved to be in vain. Additionally, we are advised in Proverbs 11:14 that in an abundance of counselors there is safety. We are also guided in this fashion:

Matthew 6: 31-33

 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

1 John: 2:17

“And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever”.

Joshua 1:8

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

Today, it is crystal clear to me that I lacked prophetic wisdom and personal knowledge of our Father in Heaven. To know God’s desires for us is to know His Word. Until recently scripture felt too heavy for me to ingest and too convoluted to perceive. The Holy text could not penetrate because of the hardened posture of my heart. I stood firmly on lived experiences, my age, carnal beliefs, my resume, and completed higher education. None of these accomplishments can withstand against spiritual attacks. We wrestle daily against an enemy who has existed before this earth was established. The Accuser of Our Brethren has studied us and our very blood lines. He is deviously creative and relentless in his pursuits. Therefore, we must seek God to train our hands for war and our fingers to battle. [Psalm 144:1]

Realizing the scheme of the enemy and desiring to build up my spirit man, I actively study the Bible and read supportive books by anointed and gifted, Holy Spirit led servants of the Lord. If the Word of God is the Sword of the Spirit, then I need to eat the Word and learn its effective application to enable me to war effectively in the Spirit. I have made a daily commitment to myself that I will read the book of Proverbs continuously…on repeat. My pledge manifests as reading one Proverbs’ chapter each morning during my 3 a.m. prayers and supplication to God in addition to other passages as Holy Spirit leads me.

Proverbs was written by King Solomon, who was David’s second son with Bathsheba and is reported to be one of the wisest, wealthiest, and most powerful men to have ever lived.  The Book of Proverbs is rich with practical tenets regarding wisdom, morality, ethics, and spiritual values. It is not necessary to personally experience every situation in life in order to be a benefactor of its lesson. I would encourage everyone to endeavor to be knowledgeable of the Word of God, to have our ears attune to listen, and to open our eyes to perceive it.

You may be contemplating the reasoning for the selected verses at the opening of this letter. As I read these passages this morning, it reaffirmed my pledge regarding wisdom and knowledge which are two separate objectives. Knowledge incorporates facts, data, and principles. Wisdom involves skillful application of said knowledge. Prayerfully the knowledge is unfettered and pristine! Woe to anyone who has bad intel.

Fellow believer, I encourage you to slowly re-read Proverbs 24: 30-35 again with an open heart. Permit the image being conveyed to form within your mind’s eye. Seek the prophetic knowledge and wisdom to be revealed. The vineyard is our life, our Christ-like walk, the works of our hands, and the direction of our feet. The stonewall is our spiritual hedge of protection. How is your hedge being fortified and maintained? And let us consider the potential results of “…a little sleep, a little slumber!”

Loose Your Purpose in Christ!
