Are we challenging God because of ignorance of His Word or rebellion against His Word that is steeped in self-will?
Let us talk about this for a moment. Whenever we know the Will of God for us through His Word and ignore or rationalize its meaning, what are we actually doing? One could argue that allocating time to study the Bible can be time-consuming. I would counter that we actively pursue other interests and make time for what is important to us.
Someone else would submit that as there are numerous translations of the Bible, which one should we trust? I would encourage that each believer should have a few study translations available; i.e.: the Legacy Standard, the New International Version, the Amplified Study, the Passion Translation, and the King James only to name a few. Your selections are entirely personal. I suggest this not based on an opportunity pertaining to efficacy, as the Bible is one book which has been highly protected throughout the years, however, to simply assist the believer in learning and in understanding the Word for proper exegesis.
Hosea 4:6 warns us: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: for thou has rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee.”
The Bible informs us according to Genesis 1: 1-4 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.”
Let us consider God’s faithful servant, Job. The Bible tells us that Job was blameless and upright, and one who feared God, turning away from evil. Job was blessed with incredible wealth. Job was a man honored with seven sons and 3 daughters and possessed countless livestock including 7,000 sheep and 3,000 camels. At his biding, Job had a vast number of servants. In the book of Job, the reader learns that there was a day when angels presented themselves to God, and Satan, the adversary, also came along with them.
The Lord of hosts said to Satan in Job Chapter 1, verses 7-22:
“From where have you come?”
Then Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming around on the earth and from walking around it.”
(8) The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered and reflected on My servant Job? …”
(9) Then Satan answered the Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not put a hedge of protection around him and his house and all that he has, on every side?…”
(12) Then the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that Job has is in your power, only do not put your hand on the man himself…”
(13) “Now there was a day when Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, …”
(14-19) Messengers came, one after another, bringing urgent news of the theft or death of all of Job’s livestock, servants, and then the sorrowful word concerning a great wind which felled the house in which Job’s children were fellowshipping together. With this news “..Then Job got up and tore his robe and shave his head [in mourning for his children, and he fell to the ground and worshipped [God]…(22) Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.”
When Job’s entire world had been shaken, when his seven sons and three daughters were killed in a singular act, when Job lost all earthly possessions, and as his health declined, Job became despondent in frustration and hopelessness. Even Job’s wife looked upon him and advised her husband to recline himself and to ‘curse God and die.’
Job 38-41 (NIV): Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said:
2“Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge?
3Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you, and you shall answer me.
4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
6 On what were its footings set,
or who laid its cornerstone—
7 while the morning stars sang together
and all the angels a shouted for joy?
8 “Who shut up the sea behind doors
when it burst forth from the womb,
9 when I made the clouds its garment
and wrapped it in thick darkness,
10 when I fixed limits for it
and set its doors and bars in place,
11 when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther;
here is where your proud waves halt’?
12 “Have you ever given orders to the morning,
or shown the dawn its place,
13 that it might take the earth by the edges
and shake the wicked out of it?
14 The earth takes shape like clay under a seal;
its features stand out like those of a garment.
15The wicked are denied their light,
and their upraised arm is broken.
16 “Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea
or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17 Have the gates of death been shown to you?
Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?
18 Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?
Tell me, if you know all this.
19 “What is the way to the abode of light?
And where does darkness reside?
20 Can you take them to their places?
Do you know the paths to their dwellings?
21 Surely you know, for you were already born!
You have lived so many years!
22 “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow
or seen the storehouses of the hail,
23 which I reserve for times of trouble,
for days of war and battle?
24 What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed,
or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth?
25 Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain,
and a path for the thunderstorm,
26 to water a land where no one lives,
an uninhabited desert,
27 to satisfy a desolate wasteland
and make it sprout with grass?
28 Does the rain have a father?
Who fathers the drops of dew?
29 From whose womb comes the ice?
Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens
30 when the waters become hard as stone,
when the surface of the deep is frozen?
31 “Can you bind the chains b of the Pleiades?
Can you loosen Orion’s belt?
32 Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons c
or lead out the Bear d with its cubs?
33 Do you know the laws of the heavens?
Can you set up God’s e dominion over the earth?
34 “Can you raise your voice to the clouds
and cover yourself with a flood of water?
35 Do you send the lightning bolts on their way?
Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Who gives the ibis wisdom f
or gives the rooster understanding? g
37 Who has the wisdom to count the clouds?
Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens
38 when the dust becomes hard
and the clods of earth stick together?
39 “Do you hunt the prey for the lioness
and satisfy the hunger of the lions
40 when they crouch in their dens
or lie in wait in a thicket?
41 Who provides food for the raven
when its young cry out to God
and wander about for lack of food?
Job 40: 1-9a
1 The Lord said to Job:
2 “Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him?
Let him who accuses God answer him!”
3 Then Job answered the Lord:
4 “I am unworthy—how can I reply to you?
I put my hand over my mouth.
5 I spoke once, but I have no answer—
twice, but I will say no more.”
6 Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm:
7 “Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.
8 “Would you discredit my justice?
Would you condemn me to justify yourself?
9 Do you have an arm like God’s
Job 41: 1-2, 8, 11
1 “Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook
or tie down its tongue with a rope?
2 Can you put a cord through its nose
or pierce its jaw with a hook?
8If you lay a hand on it,
you will remember the struggle and never do it again!
11 Who has a claim against me that I must pay?
Everything under heaven belongs to me.”
Believer, I challenge you on today to ponder the true source of any reluctance to consume the Word of God. Ask the Lord to search your heart and to pluck out anything that is not like Him, right now! I beseech you to cast out the spirit of rebellion in the Name of Jesus. I encourage you to remain steadfast in an active prayer life and to submit yourselves to His perfect Will for our lives. Ask Holy Spirit to rout out any hidden beliefs or self-truths that may be misaligning us with the prophetic calling on our lives. Are we turning our itchy ears to the loud desires of our flesh versus inclining them to the Shepherd’s call?
